FAO analyzes the status of small-scale family farming and agriculture in NENA, March 2017

15/03/2017

The FAO Regional Initiative on Small-Scale Family Farming (RI-SSFF) in the Near East and North Africa (NENA) has just published a series of peer reviewed studies that aim to provide a comprehensive, up-to-date review of small-scale family farming in the region. The information and recommendations drawn will catalyse the work of development and agricultural practitioners towards a sustainable and inclusive development in the region.

The RI-SSFF was established in 2014 with the objective of supporting countries to reduce rural poverty through a cohesive programme addressing small-scale agricultural development. To effectively be of service, the RI-SSFF partnered with key actors in the region (CIRAD, CIHEAM-IAMM, and MBC) and national teams from the six countries (Egypt, Lebanon, Mauritania, Morocco, Sudan and Tunisia) to highlight the importance of the small-scale family farmers’ situation in the region and to address the limited knowledge and information available.

For more information about the situation of small-scale family farming in the region and the recommendations for transitioning rural NENA communities out of poverty, please access the Regional SSFF report in English and French.
